About Me

Hello, I'm Penny Howarth and I have been working as a Counsellor in Selby for over 15 years. I have experience in working with clients with a wide range of issues. In addition to my practice, I also work for the NHS and as a Clinical Supervisor, supervising the work of other counsellors

I completed my Counselling Training at York St John University and work within the guidelines of the BACP Ethical Framework. I trained as an Integrative Counsellor which really means that I will work with your individuality to ensure that the counselling 'fits' you and your needs. My Counselling and Supervision experience extends to working at York Women's Counselling, RELATE, Community Counselling (Malton), GIPSIL, Place2Be and The Spurriergate Centre, York St John University, Leeds Beckett University.

Prior to becoming a counsellor I trained and worked in Social Care for many years and for 14 years in the Food Standards Agency.

I am fully insured and have an enhanced DBS check.

Counselling

I understand how hard it can be to talk about your problems and express your feelings and appreciate that counselling can be a huge step. I provide safety and confidentiality in a space where you will be met with warmth, respect and empathy without fear of judgement. I believe that counselling is very personal that is why I will work with your individuality to provide the help you need for what is troubling you.

It may be that you are struggling with anxiety, stress or depression, you may have suffered a bereavement or a loss through divorce or work, you may have some unresolved trauma that is holding you back in life, it may be that you are holding onto shame. You are struggling with anger issues and need some help to resolve them, or you may have been diagnosed with a life limiting condition or have a terminal diagnosis...these are just some of the issues that I have experience of working with.

You may not know what is at the root of your issue, you just know that you don't feel right and talking through your feelings to someone who is independent can help figure out what it is you need to feel better. I too have been a client and know how important the relationship between a client and counsellor is. I will work hard to ensure that I build a trusting and safe therapeutic space between us.

How therapy can help

Talking to a trained therapist allows a time and space that is just for you, it is different than talking to family or friends as I am able to be more objective. Sharing your problems can help you feel less isolated and allow you to have different perspectives. With my support you can begin to make positive changes in your life which may help to increase your confidence and self-esteem

These are some of the issues that people bring to counselling:

Relationship Issues

Depression

Bereavement/Loss

Emotional response to Illness

Family problems

Work Stress

Abuse

Anxiety

Low Self Esteem

Personal Development

Anger Management

Domestic Abuse

Identity Issues

Sexuality

Clinical Supervision

We will explore together what you need as an individual from your Supervision sessions. I work from a Humanisitic/Relational place and will offer you a safe space for us to explore together all aspects of your client work. I believe that supervision is a collaborative process, that there will be opportunities for reflection, education and support; working within the guidelines of your professional body’s ethical framework. My hope is that you will feel brave enough to share whatever you need to share with no fear of judgement. This will ensure that your practice remains safe and ethical and you feel supported in your work. I offer a free introductory meeting or phone call in order for us to determine if we are a good fit.

I have provided Clinical Supervision in various roles since 2014. I have a Diploma in Supervision from Leeds Centre for Psychological Development. I have recently worked as Clinical Supervisor at York St John University Communities Centre and in addition run a successful private practice.

Sessions are available currently face to face and online via Zoom.

Location

I am based at Selby Community House on Portholme Road (close to Morrisons car park). I am easily accessible from all surrounding areas inlcuding York, Goole, Sherburn and Pontefract.
